North Korea behind Sony Hack - FBI
On Friday, the FBI accused the North Korean government for being
behind the hack attack on Sony Pictures that prompted them to cancel the
release of the movie "The Interview" that was scheduled to be
released on the Christmas day of 2014.
The Interview is a new controversial movie which centers on
two American journalists enlisted by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader
Kim Jong Un.
The bureau said in a statement "As a result of our
investigation, and in close collaboration with other U.S. government
departments and agencies, the FBI now has enough information to conclude that
the North Korean government is responsible for these actions"
CNET.com
explains that the attack leaked far more personal details than previously
believed, revealing US Social Security numbers of more than 47,000 celebrities,
freelancers, and current and former Sony employees.
According to Wall
Street Journal, A data security software firm, Identity Finder showed that
the leaked files contains the personal information, salaries and home addresses
for employees and freelancers who worked at the studio. Some of the celebrities
include Silvester Stallone, Director Judd Apatow and Australian actress Rebel
Wilson.
Other data identified as leaked include termination dates,
termination reason and other sensitive information most of which was stored in
Microsoft Excel files without password protection.
MPAA CEO Chris Dodd released a statement shortly after the
FBI confirmed the link to North K
orea. "This situation is larger than a
movie’s release or the contents of someone’s private emails," Dodd
continued. "This is about the fact that criminals were able to hack in and
steal what has now been identified as many times the volume of all of the
printed material in the Library of Congress and threaten the livelihoods of
thousands of Americans who work in the film and television industry, as well as
the millions who simply choose to go to the movies. The Internet is a powerful
force for good and it is deplorable that it is being used as a weapon not just
by common criminals, but also, sophisticated cyber terrorists. We cannot allow
that front to be opened again on American corporations or the American people.”
