The Spaniard's present deal expires in 2016 and United had previously indicated they had abandoned hope of the 24-year-old signing an extension. But following the collapse of a proposed move to Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, negotiations have begun, with De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes attending the club's training complex on Thursday. Rooney fired in a late penalty to break Sir Bobby Charlton's record and prompt emotional celebrations, after Harry Kane had earlier come off the bench to put England in front during an even European Qualifier. Manchester United striker Rooney had shot wide early on before seeing two efforts saved by the goalkeeper, while at the other end Granit Xhaka was denied by Joe Hart and Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri also could not best the England shot-stopper. Rooney could get his 50th England goal in the home Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland, surpassing the record he shares with Sir Bobby Charlton.
